Amazon Game Studios are entering the world of Free to Play shooters with their first big budget game, Crucible.
Developed by Amazon Games subsidiary, Relentless Studios, Crucible is a sci-fi Third Person Shooter (TPS) which aims to blend the best bits from the top games of multiple genres. Crucible looks to incorporate bits of Riot’s League of Legends and Blizzard’s Overwatch, all wrapped up in a free sci-fi shooter. The game is focused on team-play, with “Essence Hunters” offering unique abilities to bring different playstyles to each match. Much in the vein of MOBAs, the Hunters will level up over the course of a match, unlocking abilities and increasing stats. So expect team composition and complimenting each others abilities to play an important role.
The 3 game modes on offer all focus on teamwork, with “Heart of the Hives” being a 4v4 Player vs Player vs Environment (PvPvE), making your team compete with the enemy to retrieve “hearts” from the creatures on the planet. “Alpha Hunters” sounds more traditional shooter territory, letting you team up with a buddy to compete against others in an elimination mode. Finally, “Harvester Command” is Crucible’s resource control mode, letting two teams of 8 fight to collect resources via harvest structures on the map.
It will be very interesting to see how Amazon Games handles their first big release given they own the massive streaming platform, Twitch, which they will surely use to push Crucible front and center in the gaming scene. Crucible was first announced way back in 2014, and Twitch Integration with ‘Overlord’ style functionality being offered but a long time has passed since then and the game has gone through multiple redesigns so we will need to wait and see if that feature survived.
Crucible becomes available for free on May 20th 2020 as a PC exclusive. Stay tuned!
